Fact Sheet about HelpAge International Cambodia

HelpAge International has worked in Cambodia since 1992. We now focus our efforts on 140 rural villages in Battambang and Banteay Meanchey provinces, where we:

  • support village-based Older People’s Associations, which foster social bonds and help older people look after each other
  • promote and implement an effective and sustainable model for providing care at home for the most vulnerable older people
  • help older people become financially independent by through transfer of skills and assets and diversification of livelihood activities resilient to climate change
  • help most marginalized older people with cash grant transfer
  • facilitate village-based Older People’s Associations engagement in the local planning process

Our recent achievements include:

  • trained 1,680 Older People’s Association leaders, 280 village health volunteers, 30 health centre staff on primary health care and older people’s health problems, and 280 home based care volunteers to assist frail and home bound older people
  • trained 325 Older People’s Association members on farming techniques to improve rice yield and 540 members on how to manage home gardening and vegetable growing
  • provided 300 older people with literacy training course, after which 95% of attendees said their reading and writing skills had improved, and that they were sharing these new skills with their children and grandchildren
  • contributed to the rehabilitation of 50 communities ponds and wells
  • facilitated dissemination of information on participation in the local planning in 46 communities
  • contributed to flooding relief efforts to secure food in the affected project communities

Partnerships:

HelpAge International in Cambodia works with a network of local organizations and especially Older People Associations. We highly value collaboration with government partners to inform decision makers at all levels on the concerns and challenges faced by the elderly people and actions engaged to improve their livelihood and well-being.
